Unomedical Welcomes State Goverment Internal Review
Unomedical Media Release
Friday February 15, 2008

Unomedical welcomes today’s proposed changes to the state’s pollution laws as first released to the Sydney Morning Herald by the Assistant Environment Minister Verity Firth. This forms a constructive step in resolving the confusions which Unomedical first raised with the Environmental Protection Authority when its factory first opened and again two years ago.

Health is Unomedical’s core business. Unomedical make medical instruments that help save lives. We supply most of the disposable sterile equipment packs used every day in Australian hospitals.

Unomedical continues to comply with all current laws governing the release of ethylene oxide into the air and has done so since our factory opened. Unomedical has complied with all the OH&S occupational exposure limits. Any allegations which suggest that Unomedical has illegally discharged gases are strongly refuted.

Unomedical is pleased to welcome this review into the licensing laws, and has worked closely with the Department of the Environment and Climate Change and Pittwater Council in order to ensure that as an organisation we continue to comply.

Unomedical has been subject to a regulatory vacuum at council and state level. A code of practice needs to be developed for businesses which do not require a license when applying for development. Unomedical sees today as being an important step forward in achieving this.

This is not only an industry-wide issue, it is an Australia-wide issue. Unomedical does not wish other small businesses that may be subjected to this regulatory vacuum to endure the fate it has of unfounded allegations. Unomedical sees today’s announcement as the start towards the creation of certainty and clarity in the legislation.

Unomedical continues to work closely with Pittwater Council, NSW Health and the Department of the Environment and Climate Change to ensure we continue to meet and surpass the most stringent requirements.
